Serial numbers and model description

1980: Early lugs usually have no letter, only numbers. There are apparently prototypes where 1000 were produced.
E-series: 1981–1984 BB lugs marked "E" from 1981 to mid-1984.
Z-series: 1984–1986 BB lugs marked "Z" followed by numbers.
A-series: 1986–1988 BB lugs marked "A".
B-series: 1988–1990 BB lugs marked "B".
C-series: 1990–1991 BB lugs marked "C".
D-series: 1992–1993 BB lugs marked "D".
F-series: 1994–1995 BB lugs marked 'F'.
G-series: 1996–1998 BB lugs marked 'G'.
H-series: 1998–2000 BB lugs marked 'H'.
They typically use Italian threads (36 mm x 24).

Lugs marked 'R' are for Reynolds steel and are uncommon on Merckx bicycle frames.

Left Side Markings (Size & Model), letters often indicate the model or type of tube:

- M: Strada (post-1987) or Strada (Matrix/Cromor)
- P: Professional
- R: Reynolds 531
- T: TSX
- TT: TSX
- TTB: Century TSX
- X: SLX / SPX tubing
- XB: Corsa Extra SLX century geo
- WW = Strada since 1992
