Vintage Vitus 979 aluminium road bicycle
Vitus originated in the 1930s in Saint-Étienne, France (like many bicycle brands). It began as a manufacturer of high-quality steel tubing and started building aluminum frames in the 1970s (Vitus 979). Acquired and revived in 2008/2009 by the online bicycle shop Chain Reaction Cycles (Northern Ireland).
The bicycles are now designed and developed in Northern Ireland (Belfast), with production taking place in Asia. Moment of the story: Vitus is originally a French brand, now Northern Irish/British owned.
Production of the 979 model began in 1979. The Vitus 979 frame was one of the most successful frames ever made. Famous names rode this bicycle: Phil Anderson and Allan Peiper, and Sean Kelly and Stephen Roch from Ireland.
